Haskell Smith Rhett, Jr, was a member of the class of 1943 at New Hanover High School. After graduation at age seventeen he joined the US Navy. He trained as an Aviation Ordinanceman in the bomb disposal unit and served in the Pacific theater during World War II, earning a battle star at Okinawa. After the war, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of the SAE fraternity. After college, he worked as a trust officer with Peoples Savings Bank and Trust now Wachovia in Wilmington and Winston-Salem. He was a life member of the Carolina Yacht Club. He was an avid boatsman and sailor, and was a mechanical expert.
