Born May 4, 1912 graduated New Hanover High School 1929 After graduating from Wake Forest Law School he was admitted to the bar and entered legal practice in Wilmington. He later served as Captain in the Fifth Air Force serving as an intelligence officer. He flew on 22 bomber missions in the Pacific Theater and received the Air Medal. Hewett served on the N.C. Board of Education and became first chairman of the Marine Science Council. A trustee of Wilmington College, he was instrumental in having it transformed into the UNC at Wilmington. Hewlett Dormitory on the UNC-W campus is named for him. He represented New Hanover County in the state House of Representatives where he was elected speaker of the state house. Hewlett also served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Wake Forest College and Campbell College.
