Robert Daniel Potter received an A.B., from Duke University and a Bachelor of Law from Duke University School of Law. He was a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army serving from 1944-1947.

He practiced law (1951-1981) in Charlotte, NC and served as Commissioner for Mecklenburg County (1966-1968) until he became a judge in 1981. Upon the recommendation of US Senator Jesse Helms, President Ronald Reagan appointed him as a US District Judge for the Western District of North Carolina.  He later served for many years as Chief U. S. District Judge.

He served as president of the Myers Park Civitan Club, and as a Board member of Mercy Hospital and Christendom College.  Pope John Paul II conferred the Benemerinte Medal for distinguished Christian and received the Pro Deo et Patria Medal from Christendom College.  Governor James G. Martin conferred the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1991.  He was awarded and Honorary Doctor of Laws from Sacred Heart College

Potter was the presiding judge in the 1989 trial of televangelist Jim Bakkar.
