Jurgensen, III, Christian Adolph “Sonny”
Class of 1953Born August 23, 1934 graduated New Hanover High School 1953.
Sonny played football in high school as a backup quarterback on the state championship team. He was chosen to start as quarterback for the North Carolina team in the annual North Carolina vs. South Carolina Shrine Bowl.
Jurgensen was starting quarterback at Duke University where he also played baseball.
He played for the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins. He was selected to play in the Pro Bowl and was named second Team All-Pro. At the age of 40 and in his final season Jurgenson won his third NFL passing crown.
Jurgensen is recognized as the finest pure passer of his time. A five-time Pro Bowl selection, he earned three NFL individual passing titles.
After retiring he was a commentator with CBS TV, later covering the Washington Redskins on the radio.
