Jewell graduated New Hanover High School in 1950.  He attended UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Chapel Hill Dental School.

He was a member of the NC 5th District Dental Society, American Dental Association, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, the Academy of General Dentistry and served as President of the North Carolina Dental Association.
