Class of 1938

After graduating from New Hanover High School, Cameron attended Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA where he graduated with a Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.  He served in the European theater during WWII.  He left the service at the rank of Major. Returning to Wilmington where he became Mayor.  He was instrumental in the formation of the Committee of 100, which helped revitalize industry in the area after the departure of the Atlantic Coast Line Rail Road.  He served on many organization boards.

Dan Cameron and his family have been generous and ardent benefactors of the UNC-Wilmington, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, the arts and culture of the region. North Carolina Department of Transportation honored Dan Cameron by naming the Cape Fear River on Interstate 140 (Wilmington Bypass) as the Dan Cameron Bridge for his outstanding and dedicated service to his community, state and nation.
