Lt. James Borden Lynch II died during World War II when his P-51 fighter plane crashed in Italy in 1945. "There is always a lingering doubt as to what I would do under pressure or in time of danger," Lynch wrote to his father in 1942 before he enlisted. "I shall never know whether I am capable or not until I have tested myself." He was first buried half a world away near Bari, Italy, but the New Hanover County resident and others like him eventually made their way home to Wilmington.
