Class of 1938Service: U.S. Army Air Corps
Service Dates: 1941-1946
Rank: CAPTAIN
MOS: NAVIGATOR
Notable: POW
William Weaks graduated in 1938 and became a U.S. Army B-17 Navigator. On a mission to Hamm and Munster, Germany, on March 23, 1944, flak damage caused Weaks’ aircraft to crash near Halle, Holland. The crew bailed out. We don’t know into which country or exactly when Germans captured him. First Presbyterian Church records say May 1, which meant he evaded capture momentarily in enemy-dominated territory. They imprisoned him in Stalag Luft 1 in Barth, Prussia.
Somewhere a German got the ring. His fate – death -- loomed.
Weaks returned to Wilmington following his May 1945 liberation.
In 1953, Weaks, the civilian aviator, died when his aircraft crashed enroute from Scotland to New York.
