Class of 1959

After graduation from New Hanover High School Garrabrant continued his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his B.S. and M.D. degrees.  He also completed his internship and residency at UNC-Chapel Hill.

While an intern he was the recipient of the Henry C. Fordham Award given by senior medical students in recognition of his qualities of patient humility and devotion to medicine.  During his residency Garrabrant was the first recipient of the Nathan A. Womack scholarship.  After two years as a member of the teaching faculty at the UNC Medical School, he joined the Raleigh Ear, Nose and Throat Associates where he practiced for more than thirty years.  An active member of the medical community, Dr. Garrabrant served as president of the Wake County County Medical Society and president of the North Carolina Society of Otolaryngology.  He was a member of the Raleigh Academy of Medicine, The AMA, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, the Newton Fischer Society and the Royster Medical Society.  He served on the board of the American Lung Association.

Two of his most fulfilling activities were his participation with the Open Door Clinic in Raleigh and Project Health for Leon.  Project Health provides a myriad of health care services to the city of Leon, Nicaragua.

Before Edgar passed away he expressed to his family how much his years at NHHS meant to him, and his desire to set up a scholarship for a senior interested in pursuing a health related career.  The Edgar C. Garrabrant II and John R. Garrabrant Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005.  The funds provides scholarships for graduating seniors of New Hanover High School who plan to pursue a 4 year degree as full-time students at any accredited public or private college or university.
